My 2024 Reading Year
(Not my best reading year)
Written by Steph
Hey everyone!
I hope whoever is reading this is doing well.
I decided to start writing blog posts again. I originally started a book blog in 2013. I used to mostly post book reviews and other book things. I definitely fell off from it for years. I recently decided that I want to get back into blogging because I honestly miss it. I miss sharing my love for books in written form. I also miss writing book reviews. Anyway, I wanted to write my first post as kind of an update. I want to share with you how my reading year is going so far in 2024. I’m currently writing this post in November, so the year is almost over.
How is my reading going this year?
I’m going to be raw and honest with you. Well, it could be a lot better. I turned 30 this year, and noticed that I’ve gotten a lot pickier with books lately. According to Goodreads, I only read around 20 books this year so far, but that’s not totally true. The truth is, most of the books I picked up this year, I DNF’d. If you don’t know what that term means, it basically means to not finish a book. I started DNFing a lot the past several years. I have read a lot of good books this year, but I’ve also been in a lot of reading slumps too. I think there’s a lot of pressure in the book community to constantly be reading, and to read a lot of books every month. I’m personally a slow reader. I didn’t always used to be this way. I think it happened because I became a book editor. I recently realized that life is short, and I’m never going to be able to read all the books out there. So now, if I pick up a book and I’m not loving it, I’ll happily DNF it. No regrets. I’ve noticed lately that I’m the most picky with the romance genre. I can’t really say why, probably because I’ve read so many romance books over the years, and I know what I like/don’t like now. Also, if I’m loving a book, I’ll let myself take my time with it instead of flying through it. Every once in a while, I’ll read a really good book. But this year, it feels like most of the books I’m reading, I’m not enjoying. Luckily, I just read an amazing book! I’m not going to tell you what book it is, because I want it to be a surprise. I’m going to post a written book review for it.
Sorry this first post is so long, lol! I just really needed to get these feelings out. Can anyone else relate to this? Also, how is your reading year going? I would love to know! Thank you so much for reading this post. Have a great day and keep on reading!

I’ve read 34 books this year so far! Very happy with it because my goal is 35. I only got back into reading last year and it has been an amazing thing for my mental health. How far do you get into a book before you DNF it? If I start a book I have a very hard time not finishing it lol
Hey Jess! Thanks so much for reading and commenting. 34 books is good! In the past I used to read like 50 books a year. It definitely slowed down a lot. I’m definitely a much slower reader now, but I let myself take my time with books now instead of rushing through them. I DNF so much it’s not funny, lol! It depends on the book. Lately, I’ve been DNFing books in the first chapter. I can tell pretty early on if I’m going to like a book or not. Sometimes I’ll give it 50-100 pages. The older I get, I realize that life is too short to read books I’m not enjoying. 🙂
